A get-together to work on improving the Mumbai coverage in OpenStreetMap

Report

13-9-2008

The sprint got underway at around 11 am at the office of progress partners. Kenneth gave an overview of the problems in the Mumbai OSM map and also showed how to install, configure and use the online and offline OSM tools. While Rajeev was working on how to do this programmatically, the others started working on the map between versova and worli using the gps tracks logged on the way to the workshop. Saswata, Mehul, Sukdev, Rajeev, Jtd, Kenneth and three people from roadjams.info, Vitrag, Abha and Akshay, were there. The roadjams guys tried out some of the OSM tools and looked interested in using OSM for their app. They promised to upload the large amount of gps tracks they have available.

14-9 2008

Work started at around 10 am, two students from an engineering college, Tushar Hindlekar and Poornashree Rajendra came in and mehul and saswata sat with them and worked on the map. Saswata offered to provide 2 machines with bandwidth on every saturday for students to use for mapping.

The work was carried on till 3 pm, after which everyone left due to Ganpati festival. The mapping of the main road from Lower Parel to Shopper's Stop (Andheri West), Bandra Kurla Complex and some areas in Bandra and Vile Parle were corrected to match the gps tracks. Roads in Andheri East, mainly Nagardas Road, Parsi Panchayat Road and Mahakali Caves Road were found to be off mark. These roads were corrected, however, a lot of smaller roads connected to it needs to be corrected.

What is this all about?

Go here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=19.095&lon=72.8353&zoom=16

you need to be logged in to do this - register and login. You should see Juhu map with Yahoo satellite image as a background. If you do not see the image, click on the options button which is the third button on the bottom row on the left. It has a tick mark. From options choose areal image Yahoo.

Look at the map of Juhu airport and all the roads. You will find that everything is slightly moved and does not coincide with the satellite map. These features were imported from the AND database, and in the case of Mumbai it is inaccurate in the sense that all features a slightly shifted.

If you look at the Juhu-Tara road that goes along the beach you will find that it is correctly aligned. This was done using a gps track and it was found that the satellite map is accurate and serves as a good base for rectifying the map.

The idea of a sprint is to get started on this and do the bulk of the work.

If you click on the second icon - 'show gps tracks' - you will see tracks uploaded from GPS loggers in this area as thin blue lines.

Why do this when google lets you modify its maps?

Oh? and who owns the data when entered into google? Does google give you access to the underlying data of its maps?

What is a sprint?

A sprint is where a bunch of people get together to finish off a particular task. So why get together? Can we not do it individually? We can, but sometimes it is necessary to meet personally and tackle something. Group enthusiasm is important and if all are in one room, procedural problems can be solved easily, doubts clarified and work done. Sprints can also be done on IRC, but even there most sprints have the main group physically meeting - and very often smaller groups meeting in other places, all connected through IRC.

Do I need to attend the whole thing? Can a person drop in for one day or for a few hours? Certainly - come for as long as you can, when you can.
